The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program

The world's finest system of structured music study and assessment

The Royal Conservatory of Music, established in 1886, has provided an unparalleled music education to millions of individuals from all across Canada.   Today, The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program is considered the preeminent music education system in many countries around the world.

The Certificate Program is a comprehensive and effectively sequenced system of music study and standard of assessment, that provides a clear path for well-rounded musical training, from beginner to advanced levels, and a consistent and meaningful structure for recognizing achievement, and rewarding excellence.  The skills acquired through The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program help students attain a level of proficiency that will give them the tools they need to learn music independently, leading to lifelong enjoyment of music-making.

The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program is available for the study of 21 different instruments plus voice and encompasses:

  • Ten Levels (1 – 10), plus Preparatory/Introductory Levels and Professional ARCT (Associate of The Royal Conservatory) designations for performers and teachers
  • Technical requirements, etudes, repertoire, ear training and sight reading at each level
  • The academic subjects of foundational theory, harmony, counterpoint, analysis, and history

The Certificate Program of music study enables students to progress at their own pace and move freely through the system.  At each level of study, a Certificate of Achievement can be earned by successfully completing a Royal Conservatory practical examination.  Achievement in Royal Conservatory examinations is recognized for credit toward secondary school graduation in many schools systems across Canada, and is also an important element in entrance requirements for professional music programs at many universities and colleges across North America.

The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program inspires excellence in students through individual assessments at each level, and enables students to celebrate their accomplishments and track their progress along with their friends and peers across the country and around the world.

Students of all ages experience profound benefits from the Certificate Program’s structured system of music study, and it has been proven to be a powerful tool for attaining children’s full intellectual, social and creative potential.

Embraced by more than 40,000 teachers and motivating over 500,000 students to participate in music-making each year

The Certificate Program is designed to inspire students with a focus on awakening enthusiasm, motivating deeper engagement, empowering artistic expression, acknowledging accomplishments and celebrating achievement.

With the objective of developing well-rounded musicianship, the curriculum addresses all the essential elements of musical training including:

Physical Development

Developing comfort and ease in playing an instrument or singing allows students to effectively transform notes on the page into beautiful sound.  Students are guided to prepare patterns such as scales, chords, and arpeggios in a series of keys to build a solid foundation that will allow them to flourish as musicians.

Aural Development

Learning to listen while performing and practicing is one of the most important aspects of musicianship.  Students are guided to identify fundamental elements such as intervals, chords, cadences, and rhythmic patterns, which supports the development of critical listening skills, and contributes to successful self-assessment as part of the learning process, as well as a deeper appreciation of music.

Musical Literacy

Building knowledge and understanding of the musical language will lead to lifelong enjoyment of music-making.  Students are guided to acquire the skills that will enable them to learn music efficiently and, ultimately, independently.

Performance Skills

Studying repertoire in a wide range of styles and genres, and polishing it for performance and assessment, are essential to mastering musicianship skills, nurturing creativity, and developing self-confidence.
